Portraits on insomnia
This series of portraits I made for a project to depict the feeling of insomnia.
They were initially inspired by the song
Routines in The Night
and the album cover to Phoebe Bridgers'
Punisher,
but they took on a new feeling and look by the end.
Portraits are my favourite thing to create. Capturing the soul of a person
and their emotions in a single image is a powerful thing and, to me, the best way to
connect the subject and the viewer.
The ability to represent the deepest part of a person's psyche with a picture
is one that should not be underestimated. This may be my favourite project so far.
Insomnia is a feeling I relate to deeply and I know I'm not alone in that.
Getting the chance to truly show what journeys a person goes on when sleep escapes them
is an honour. Being awake and alone is not necessarily a negative feeling,
far from it, in my opinion. But it does carry a sense of loneliness with it that is
perfect for doing some well-deserved self-reflection in a world of constant noise.
